Major theory and research in organizational evolution are reviewed, with an emphasis on the population ecology, organizational systematics, and punctuated equilibrium theory. Population ecology is the science of how social environments shape rates of creation and death of organizational forms, rates of organizational founding and mortality, and rates of change in organizational forms. Organizational systematics is the science of organizational differences: the study of differences among the forms of organizational populations, the development of taxonomic theory, the recognition and classification of important differences, and the discovery of how and why the differences came about. Punctuated equilibrium theory postulate a very different view against Darwinian gradualism. The theory propose that lineages exist in essentially static form(equilibrium) over most of their histories, and new species arises abruptly, through sudden, revolutionary punctuations of rapid change. These theories were studied separately, but recently attempts to synthesize perspectives of the various theories are emerging. Some key contributions and criticisms of organizational evolution are addressed, and some suggestions for future research are proposed.
