그릿의 최근 연구동향과 재개념화의 필요성

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구에서는 최근 관심을 받고 있는 주제인 그릿(Grit)에 대한 그간의 연구동향을 살피고, 기존의 연구결과들에서 나타나는 문제점을 비판적으로 검토하여 그릿의 재개념화가 필요하다는 주장을 전개하였다. 그동안 그릿은 장기적인 목표달성을 위한 열정과 인내를 나타내는 개념으로 이해되었으며, 학업수행, 적응, 진로, 삶의 만족 등 다양한 영역에서 성공을 예측하는 요인으로 주목을 받아왔다. 그릿의 핵심적 요소인 열정과 인내는 각각 흥미유지와 노력지속이라는 하위요인으로서 척도의 문항을 구성하고 있다. 그릿 연구에서의 문제점은 크게 보아 구인의 개념적 정의가 심리학의 유사한 개념들과 구분되지 않는다는 것과, 조작적 정의를 반영하는 척도의 불완전성으로 말미암아 일관되지 않은 결과가 나타난다는 것이다. 이를 해결하기 위해 후속 연구에서는 목표, 열정, 인내에 대한 전면적 고찰을 통해 그릿의 재개념화 작업이 이루어질 필요가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this study, I first summarized studies of grit literature in order to critically review theoretical concept and empirical results of grit. Grit was defined as passion and perseverance for long-term goals, and it has been found to be a powerful and positive predictor of academic performance, career, work, and various types of life adjustment. However, it has been criticized that 1) grit is not clearly distinctive from personality and/or motivational constructs and 2) the effects of grit’s outcome are not consistent across studies. Key characteristics of grit, such as passion and perseverance, are usually measured by consistency of interest and perseverance of effort in grit scale. I claim that theoretical controversies of grit research are related to the problems of grit’s original conceptualization and its operationalization, resulting in limitations of scale/items and inconsistent outcomes. Therefore, I suggest that researchers conduct future studies in order to reconceptualize grit by considering each sub-component of grit such as goal, passion, and perseverance.
