관련변인을 중심으로 비교한 자아통합 척도 연구 = A Study of Ego-integrity Scales: Comparisons of Related Factors

Since Erikson(1950) argued that ego-integrity was an important developmental task in old age, many studies attempted to explore the factors which had effect on the achievement of ego-integrity in old age. However, the differences in conceptualizing the ego-integrity in those studies make it hard to compare the results. For example, Ryff and Heincke(1988) defined ego-integrity as accepting one’s past but Kim(1988) defined it as not only accepting the past but also being satisfying with the current life and accepting the forthcoming death. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the different conceptualization of ego-integrity leads to different results in finding the related factors on ego-integrity achievement. A survey comprising assessments on Ryff and Heincke’s ego-integrity scale, the Kim’s scale, social and population data, life satisfaction, and depression was conducted amon 94 old people over 63, from a community social welfare center. The ego-integrity score in Ryff and Heincke’s scale had a positive correlation with the subjective economic level, but not with the years of education, income and health. In contrast, the ego-integrity score in Kim’s scale had positive correlations with the subjective economic level, years of education, income and health. These results have suggested that correct conceptualization about ego-integrity is needed for aging study.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

Erikson이 노년기에 달성해야 할 중요한 발달과업으로 자아통합을 언급한 이래, 어떤 특성을 지닌 노인이 자아통합 수준이 높은지에 관한 연구들이 꾸준히 이루어져 왔다. 그러나 학자들마다 자아통합에 대한 개념 정의가 다르고, 척도의 구성요인이 서로 다르기 때문에 일관된 연구결과의 축적에 어려움이 있다. 예를 들면 Ryff와 Heincke(1988)는 자아통합을 과거수용과 과거 만족으로 보았으나, 김정순(1988)은 자아통합을 과거수용 뿐만 아니라 현재 삶의 만족과 미래 죽음의 수용까지 포함하는 것으로 보았다. 본 연구에서는 자아통합에 대한 개념 정의의 차이가 관련 변인에 관한 연구에서 어떠한 차이를 가져오는지 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 지역의 노인복지시설을 이용하는 만 63세 이상 노인 94명을 대상으로 Ryff와 Heincke의 자아통합 척도, 김정순의 자아통합 척도, 인구 사회학적 변인, 삶의 만족도, 우울 척도로 구성된 설문을 실시하였다. 그 결과, Ryff와 Heincke의 척도는 주관적 경제상태와만 정적상관을 보였을 뿐, 학력, 건강, 실제 월수입과는 무관한 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 김정순의 척도는 주관적 경제상태 뿐만 아니라 학력, 건강, 실제 월수입과도 유의미한 정적상관이 나타났다. 이는 자아통합을 어떻게 정의하고 어떤 요인을 포함하여 측정하느냐에 따라 동일한 노인의 경우에도 관련변인과의 관계가 다르게 나올 수 있음을 의미하는 것으로 척도의 제작과 선택에 보다 신중해야 함을 말해주는 것이다.
