재생에 나타난 멜로드라마적 양식 = Melodramatic Style in Revival(재생)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이광수 소설의 경우, ‘더 이상 새로울 것이 없다’는 단언이 나올 정도로 다양한 접근이 이루어진 연구 대상임에도 불구하고, 그의 소설에 대한 통속성이나 대중성 혹은 멜로드라마에 대한 연구는 거의 진행되지 않았으며, 진행되었다 하더라도 비난 일변도로 채워져 있는 것이 사실이다. 이에 ‘비난’이라는 감정적 대응이 아닌 논리적이고 합리적 접근이 필요하며, 본고 역시 그러한 의도에서 출발하였다. 이에 본고는 이광수 소설 재생의 대중성의 원리를 멜로드라마적 양상의 측면에서 살펴보고자 하였다. 재생은 숭고와 비속이라는 이분법적 대립 구도 안에 봉구와 순영이라는 두 인물의 비극적 삶을 배치함으로써 숭고를 지향하고 비속을 경계할 것을 보여준다. 대중적 숭고의 전형인 봉구와 물적육체적 욕망을 버리지 못하고 이에 끌려가는 순영을 통해 도덕적 양극화의 공식성을 드러냄으로써 독자로 하여금 당대 사회의 윤리 의식을 가늠하게 한다. 멜로드라마적 양상을 효과적으로 드러내기 위해서 소설에서는 이와 같은 이분법을 다소 극단적으로 설정하고 있다. 인물의 성격이나 선택의 행위에서 드러나는 과잉과 윤리적 태도는 도덕적 양극화를 강화하는 계기로 작용하는 것이다. 또한 플롯의 측면에서 보면 동일한 내용을 지닌 사건들을 반복적으로 결합시킴으로써 독자 대중의 몰입을 유도한다. 이외에도 서술상에 있어 내부초점의 적극적 활용과 대화체, 상세감각 등에 의한 묘사는 독자의 감정이입에 도움을 주며 동시에 대상과의 친밀성을 유발한다. 이로써 소설의 멜로드라마적 효과는 물론 대중성이 강화되는 양상을 발견할 수 있다. 또한 재생이 지닌 의미는 작가의 다른 소설과 연속성 위에 놓여 있다는 사실에서 발견할 수 있다. 즉 멜로드라마적 특징을 두루 갖춘 재생의 서사적 구조가 이 작품에서 끝나는 것은 아니라, 이후 이광수의 흙이나 사랑과 같은 대표작에서는 물론, 애욕의 피안 사랑의 다각형 혁명가의 아내 그 여자의 일생 등에서도 그대로 반복되거나 혹은 변형되어 등장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper analyzes melodramatic aspects of Revival written by Lee, Gwang-su. Revival shows how the Joseon society changed after Movement of March First. By depicting an intellectual, female character’s wretched course and a male character’s attitude toward ethical purity in a straightforward manner, the writer describes people who become money and pleasure-centered. Melodramatic aspects of Revival can be defined as follows. First, dichotomic contrast between sublimity and vulgarity is represented. Because a woman who he is in love with betrays him, Bongu is in despair. He decides to get revenge. Eventually, he regains ethical purity and self-pride. Soonyoung has a mental conflict between material, physical desires and true love. She throws away love, has hardships, and finally commits suicide. In this novel, while Bongu is an archetype of sublimity, Soonyoung is that of vulgarity. The Sublimity and vulgarity showing aspects of ethical bipolarity are schematized. Ethical bipolarity in melodramas is represented with an intention to publicize moral laws which are based on historical and social value system of the times. Second, melodramatic aspects shown in structures of the novel are found in the linear plot by the repetition of the same events. Linear plot increases readers’ concentration span on the novel and attracts readers’ attention as well. Third, internal points of view of certain characters and dialogues describe the novel. These are not the only characteristics of melodramas. They decrease the psychological distance toward the target of the novel and induce reader’ absorption and empathy.In conclusion, ethical bipolarity and distance-decreasing method toward readers are the melodramatic characteristics of Revival. These characteristics are shown repeatedly in other novels of the writer and form archetypes in the formation of popularity of Lee, Gwang-su’s novels.
