실패한 벤처기업의 특성 : 사례연구 = Characteristics of Failed Venture Companies : A Case Study

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 주요 목적은 실패한 벤처기업들의 공통적 특징을 식별하는 것이다. 연구의 목적 을 달성하기 위해 기업가 특성, 환경, 전략, 조직특성이란 맥락에서 실패한 벤처기업 3개 사에 대한 다중사례연구를 실시했다. 그 결과 실패한 벤처기업은 다음과 같은 공통점이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 첫째, 기업가의 자만심이 합의에 바탕을 둔 의사결정보다는 독단에 빠지도록 하며 기업가의 지나친 성취욕구가 과욕을 불러와 합리적 판단을 어렵게 하여 결국 자멸하게 되는 결과를 초래할 가능성이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 조직이 성장해 감에 따라 거기에 부합하는 적절한 경영방식과 관리시스템이 만들어져야 하는데 그렇지 못하며 이는 결과적으로 내부적 조정기능을 상실케 하여 실패를 유발할 가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 기술중심적 사고방식에서 벗어나지 못하고 기술만을 강조한 나머지 시장 및 고객에 대한 이해가 부족하거 나 차별화된 마케팅 전략이 없을 경우 실패할 가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 환경에 대한 감시와 대처가 소홀할 경우 실패할 가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 고객욕구의 변화, 파괴적 기술의 출현 등과 같은 환경의 충격에 대한 완충메커니즘을 구축하고 있지 못한 경우 실패할 가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The main purpose of this research is to identify the common characteristics of failed venture companies. For the purpose, it conducts a case study on three failed venture companies in terms of entrepreneur's characteristics, environment, strategy, and organizational structure, which have been considered as key factors in the failure of venture companies. The findings of the study are as follows. First, entrepreneurs' excessive self-confidence and need for achievement led them into arbitrary decision. These personality traits were obstacles to rational decision making. Second, most failed companies in the case study lack proper management system according to growth stages. Third, they tend to poorly understand customers' needs and wants, as compared with their emphasis on technology, and tend to lack in marketing strategy. Fourth, they tend to neglect environmental scanning and analysis, and have little internal buffering mechanisms to cope with environmental shocks.
