교차성의 지리와 접합의 정치: 페미니즘과 지리학의 경계 넘기를 위하여 = Geographies of Intersectionality and the Politics of Articulation: Border Crossing between Feminism and Geography

Modern discourse in academic disciplines overall grounds on the distinction and classification of research objects. Not unlike history and sociology, which stand on classifying times and social groups respectively, modern geographic thoughts also overarch distinguishing and classifying regions on the earth. The hegemony of time-dominated narration in modern episteme is deeply related with such boundary-marking tradition in geography. Yet, the transformation of global capitalism and the collapse of grand narratives since the 1990s have engendered socio-spaital fragmentation, which is both a crisis and an opportunity in civil society. Among disciplines, geography and feminism have vibrantly contributed to developing discussions on such recent changes. Such vibrancy lies in the common historical situation in which these two disciplinary bodies have been repressed and marginalized. I hope that feminist theorists and activists would more actively dialogue and articulate with critical human geography and other social sciences in the realm of education, research, and practice.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

연구 대상의 구분과 분류는 근대 학술 담론의 일차적 토대가 되어 왔다. 역사학에서 시대 구분이, 사회학에서 사회집단의 분류가 그렇듯, 지역의 구분과 규준에 따른 분류는 지리적 담론의 기저에 자리잡고 있다. 이러한 ‘경계 긋기’로서의 지리학은 시간적 서사가 공간적 서사를 지배하고 재구성해 온 근대 에피스테메의 성립과 밀접한 관계가 있다. 그러나 1980년대 이후 글로벌 자본주의의 변동과 거대 서사의 붕괴는 사회·공간적 분절화라는 위협이자 기회를 파생해왔는데, 지리학과 페미니즘은 이의 학술적 논의를 확대, 심화하는 데에 크게 기여해 왔다. 지리학에서는 지리적 상상력으로서 시간적 서사에 도전하고 이를 재구성하고 있으며, 페미니즘에서는 차이와 주체화의 과정에 주목하면서 지배적 범주의 사회적 구성을 이론화해 오고 있다. 이는 시간적 서사의 헤게모니 하에서 여성과 공간은 오랫동안 수동적인 그릇, 소유하고 정복할 수 있는 대상, 길들여져야 할 대상으로 억압되고 주변화 되어 온 공통의 경험과 위치성을 갖고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 측면에서 여성과 공간, 그리고 페미니즘과 지리학은 경계 넘기라는 포스트모던의 정치의 풍부한 토양 위에 서 있으며, 한국 사회의 페미니즘이 지리학을 포함한 다양한 학문들과 더욱 활발하게 교육, 연구, 실천의 장에서 접합할 수 있기를 고대한다.
