국어 움라우트 현상의 유추적 확대와 화용론 = On the Analogical extension of Korean umlaut and the Pragmatics.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this paper I have tried to show that the synchronic phonological process of umlaut in various regional dialects of Korea must be viewed as not a subject of qualitative phenomena(all- or-nothing), but as quantitative phenomena(a matter of more-or-less). I observed to the effect that the effects of pragmatic principles extend to the process of Korean umlaut, that is, the way umlauted forms are used in everyday life depends upon the sensitive intention of speaker and the contexts in which the communicative act is performed. In this connection, I have described in this paper many kinds of analogical extensions of Korean umlaut.
As a consequence, I concluded that much examples of the analogical extension of umlaut, especially in the condition of non-nominative case positions are the classic cases of exaptation(Lass 1990: 98-99, 1997), a type of form-function reanalysis according to Croft(2000: 127-8).(Chon-buk National University)
