During the reign of Prince Gwanghae, several palaces like Changgyeong, Ingyeong and Gyeongdeok were constructed or repaired. Even when one considers the fact that Gyeongbok, Changdeok, and Changgyeong Palaces were entirely destroyed by fire during the 1592 invasion of Hideyoshi, the palace construction was done unusually frequently. The Prince rebuilt the burnt palaces and tried to construct two new palaces, at the same time. This caused a severe controversy in his government and he had to face a strong opposition derived from the financial difficulty caused by the war but he carried out his original intention.
There were various reasons for this situation but the Prince’s belief in Feng Shui was a key factor. He was interested in Feng Shui under the influence of his father, King Seonjo. The King took an interest in Feng Shui since the war. He thought that the location of the capital or palaces had a certain connection with the war, therefore Feng Shui became the principle of his capital reconstruction plan. Even though the King’s plan had not been profoundly conducted, Feng Shui became widely prevailed at the time.
The Prince Gwanghae became interested in Feng Shui with a different reason from his father. It was the weak justification for his enthronement. He was reluctant to live in Changdeok Palace cause the palace was where King Danjong and Prince Yeonsan were dethroned. So he tried to justify his enthronement with Feng Shui. His plan to transfer the capital to Kyoha under the name of the decline of the capital Hanyang’s fortune reveals his intention. His simultaneous constructions of Ingyeong and Gyeongdeok Palaces in spite of strong opposition of his merits also shows his belief in Feng Shui. The construction of Gyeongdeok Palace was especially inspired by the rumor of King’s fortune in Saemun village.
The King and Prince’s interest in Feng Shui and its various applications, caused a strong interest in Feng Shui among gentries as well. Feng Shui in fashion at the time was a superstitious one which ws the principle of the grave spot selection. Gentries’ concern for Feng Shui could also have been cause by the Japanese invasion, but it is more likely to had been inspired the sovereigns’ belief in a superstitious Feng Shui. Even though concerns were raised on the wide spread of a superstitious Feng Shui, but the wide interest in Feng Shui was consistently dispersed.
