The purpose of this study was to analyze the mental health profile^1) in female dancers. It was hypothesized that there would be significant differences in mood states as functions of dance level(professional and college) and dance major(Korean, Ballet, Modern). The mood states were separately analyzed in everyday life and dance activity situation. Three hundred two female college and professional dancers majoring in Korean, Ballet, Modern dance completed the Profile of Mood State(POMS). The POMS included six mood states: tension, anger, depression, vigor, confusion, fatigue. The results of multivariate statistical procedures exhibited that there were no significant differences in POMS among Korean, Ballet, and Modern dancers. Professional dancers reported more positive POMS than college dancers during dance activities. However, Professional dancers exhibited more negative POMS than college dancers during everyday life. These results were discussed with various psycho-social perspectives and interpreted based on the assumption that excessive physical activities might play a central role in mental health.
