Study On Goryeo Buddhist Sculptures
in the Western Bukhan Mountain in Seoul

Although there are many historical sites and relics in Seoul from the prehistoric age to Joseon period, Buddhist relics have been lacked of interests because they are rare. By the way, concerns about Buddhist images in Bukhan Mountain where Buddhist culture flourished in history are on the increase as a standing Bodhisattva image in late Unified Silla or early Goryeo period has been known in a field survey carried out lately. I would like to investigate Goryeo Buddhist images in western Bukhan Mountain - focus on the standing Bodhisattva image in Jingwannaedong(津寬內洞 石造菩薩立像) and the standing image carved on a rock surface in Samcheonsa temple site(三千寺址 磨崖佛立像) as the beginning of a study on Buddhist sculptures in seoul. These images are important materials of the study on Buddhist sculptures in seoul that still are not enough.
The standing Bodhisattva image in Jingwannaedong succeeds to the sytle of Unified Silla which is massive and voluminous. While it represents a development into the sytle of Goryeo at the same time in that it wears a Buddhist garment instead of a veil robe and has a short body ratio and so on.
The standing image carved on rock surface in Samcheonsa temple site is tall and flat. These features of style are thought to be related to regular appearance of tall and flat images in Goryeo period. Also this image is very valuable as an example of Beopsang sect(法相宗) images in early Goryeo period because Samcheon temple is supposed to be one of Beopsang sect temples.
