This paper analyzes the Korean-Chinese migration to South Korea which begun in the mid-1980s. The data is from in-depth interviews of 56 Korean-Chinese women who work as domestic servants or restaurant employees. The following issues were addressed during the interviews: 1) why the Korean-Chinese migration is more feminized than other Asian migration to Korea; 2) what role the migrants families play 3) what impact the Korean-Chinese women’s migration to Korea has upon their families. The Korean-Chinese women’s migration to Korea is interpreted from a feminist perspective by focusing on the ‘feminization of migration’ and the ‘transnational family’. The results indicate that the migration of the Korean-Chinese to South Korea has transformed from a diaspora to a labor migration due to the economic gap between Korea and China. Many Korean-Chinese migrate to Korea to earn money. However, the Korean government often limits their entry, thus international marriage is sometimes opted as a means to gain entry into Korea. Moreover, Korean-Chinese women are more likely to migrate to Korea because it is easier for them to find a job and save money there. The strategies adopted by Korean-Chinese families to enter Korea usually depend on the family’s life course and their socio-economic status in China. It is essential for the women to get support from their husbands and families in order to migrate overseas. However, long periods of separation sometimes lead to divorce and child deviation. Nevertheless, the Korean-Chinese female migrants have demonstrated strength and determination.
