국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 빈곤층의 생활과 의식을 분석하고 있다. 이를 위하여 2004년부터 2006년까지 부산, 울산, 경남 지역 저소득층을 대상으로 실시된 설문 조사와 심층 인터뷰 자료를 활용하였다. 빈곤층의 생활 세계는 경제, 사회관계, 문화, 심리적 요인이 중첩되어 빈곤에서 빠져나오기 힘든 박탈의 그물망이 구성되고 있다. 소득/소비의 결핍이 교육, 노동, 사회관계의 결핍과 자아 박탈을 조장하고, 역으로 이들 기회요인들의 박탈이 소득/소비의 결핍을 촉발하면서 복합적 박탈의 그물망이 구조화되고 있다. 박탈 망이 구조화되고 있다는 것은 불평등에 전면적으로 포섭되고 있는 생활세계를 투영한다. 빈곤층의 의식과 태도에서는 한편으로 빈곤에서 벗어나려는 강한 의지를 관찰하게 된다. 이런 태도는 박탈 경험과 단절하여 중심에 동화하려는 기획에서 연출된다. 그러나 복합적 박탈상황은 중심에 동화하는 것을 제약하는 존재조건이기 때문에 동화의 기획은 실패로 끝나기 쉽고 이 과정에서 동화의 허구에 저항하는 인식이 일어나기도 한다. 이와 같은 빈곤층의 생활과 의식에 나타나는 다중성은 불평등의 지배에 대한 동화와 분리 경험이 교차되는 생활세계의 긴장을 드러낸다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the living condition and consciousness of the poor. For this purpose, three years’ consecutive surveys and in-depth interviews from 2004 to 2006 were conducted for the low income families residing in Busan, Ulsan, and Kyeongnam of South Korea.
Life of the poor is characterized by multiple deprivations. Various deficiencies measured by economic, social, individual aspects are mutually tightening and structuring a ‘web of deprivation’ which is difficult to exit from once fallen into. The structuration of deprivation web reflects the every day life enclaved by inequality. Economic deficiency, lack of individual and social capitals, and maladjustment of self are the way in which inequality is experienced over the life course.
In the consciousness and attitude of the poor, we witness tensions of assimilation into and separation from inequality. The aspiration for breaking out of poverty competes with the feeling of resistance against the coerced assimilation. Symptoms of deprivations and compromises, assimilation and separation are floating in the experience of the poor. Reflexive practices are required to tackle the domination of every day life by inequality and the resultant multiple deprivation of the poverty.
