The purpose of this study is to investigate the real situations of multicultural education in elementary and secondary schools. For this purpose we carried out qualitative comparative case study mainly using content analysis method on the school multicultural education programs and in-depth interviews on teachers. The main results are as follows: First, most of the multicultural education programs for schools were `cultural education` and `language educations`. Second, in the majority cases multicultural education programs were provided for students, especially students of multicultural families. Third, many schools ran multicultural educaton programs in the irregular curriculum as like after school program. Fourth, many teachers perceived the goal and characteristics of multicultural education as the education of foreign culture or education for adaptation to Korean society, and also transformed bilingual education into foreign language education. Fifth, scarcity of teachers` professionalism, budget limits, criticism on the reverse discrimination and distictions were mentioned as main difficulties. In this study, based on these results, we give some suggestions to improve the current situation of multicultural education in elementary and secondary schools.
