가족구조에 따른 청소년 성행위에 대한 인과요인의 변이 = 부모통제, 종교성, 비행친구, 비행을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 청소년 성행위에 영향을 끼치는 주요요인이라고 할 수 있는 부모통제, 종교성, 비행친구, 비행의 변수들이 가족의 형태가 지니는 독특한 문화와 환경에 따라 다양하게 나타나는지를 검증한다. 가족형태의 분류와 가설의 설정은 권력통제이론에 기반하여 구성되었다. 전통사회의 특징을 나타내는 가부장가족은 남편의 직업적 권위가 아내에 비해 상대적으로 높은 가족을, 그리고 현대사회의 특징을 나타내는 평등가족은 남편과 아내의 직업적 권위가 균형을 이루는 가족으로 구분되었다. 그리고 청소년 성행위에 영향을 끼치는 주요변수들 중 부모통제, 종교성, 비행은 전통적 가부장가족에서 청소년들의 성행위에 유의미하게 영향을 끼치는 반면, 평등가족에서는 비행친구의 영향이 주요할 것이라는 가설을 설정하였다. 가설의 검증을 위해서 1990년에 행해진 미국 뉴욕 주 앰허스트 지역의 638명의 청소년 조사자료 중 학부모 자료가 함께 포함된 420명의 자료를 분석하였다. 분석결과는 어머니의 도구적 통제, 종교성, 비행의 영향이 가부장가족에서 자란 청소년들에게는 유의미한 영향으로 작용하는 반면, 평등가족에서는 비행친구의 영향만이 주요하게 나타남으로써 연구의 가설들이 전적으로 지지되었다. 이러한 결과는 가부장가족에서는 전통사회에서 강조되었던 규범적인 환경으로 인해 어머니의 도구적 통제를 비롯한 종교성, 비행 등이 청소년 성행위에 영향을 줄 수 있는 바탕이 용이하게 제공되는 반면, 전통적 규범으로부터 벗어난 평등가족의 경우, 전통적 가치에 기초한 가족관련요인과 비행은 유의미한 영향을 끼치지 못하는 대신 성에 대해 더 관대할 수 있는 비행친구의 영향이 가족이 지니는 어떠한 규범적 제약도 없이 직접적으로 청소년들의 성행위의사결정에 영향을 미치고 있음을 보여주고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the factors affecting adolescents’ sexual activity, which are different in traditional and modern families. To the extent that societal attitudes toward sexuality have been changing in synchrony with other norms and values, this study hypothesizes previously established associations between sexual behavior and other major factors, such as parental control, religion, peers, and delinquency, may vary, depending on family structures. Drawing on Hagan’s power control theory, two ideal types of families are constructed: the patriarchal family(traditional family), which consists of a husband who is employed in an authority position and a wife who is working in a non-authority position or unemployed outside the home, and the egalitarian family(modern family), in which husbands and wives are employed in the same authority position outside home. These analyses are based on data from a sample of 638 suburban youth that were collected in 1990 by Singer and Levine in the town of Amherst, New York. However, in examining hypotheses, this study utilizes 420 cases which parents’ information is available. The results support the hypotheses that maternal instrumental control, religiosity, and delinquency significantly influence adolescent sexual behavior in the traditional family, while delinquent peer is the only variable which is significant in the modern family. The implication is that differences in transmission of cultural norms and parental controls in families condition the internal mechanisms by which adolescents decide to have sex. While the traditional family context brings about a prevailing normative environment that delimits the boundaries of acceptable behaviors for adolescents, modern family context generates liberal family values in which delinquent peers who favor unconventional behaviors directly influences adolescent sexual behavior without any countervailing parental and traditional controls to suppress peers.
