사회자본과 범죄학이론

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사회자본 개념은 많은 사회과학자들로부터 주목을 받아왔고, 범죄학에서도 예외는 아니다. 하지만 사회자본은 개념의 지나친 포괄성과 모호성 때문에 비판의 대상이 되어왔다. 또한 사회자본 개념이 정말 새로운 개념으로서 가치를 갖는가의 문제 등으로 많은 논쟁이 이루어져왔다. 이 논문은 사회자본 개념을 활용한 범죄학 연구들에 대한 분석을 통해서 사회자본 개념의 문제점을 살펴보고, 사회자본이 범죄학 분야에서 새로운 개념으로서 기여할 가능성이 있는지에 대해서 검토한다. 사회자본 개념을 활용한 범죄학 연구들은 범죄학이론이 사회자본의 긍정적 측면과 부정적 측면, 그리고 그 맥락을 명확하게 밝혀준다. 사회자본의 긍정적 측면은 사회통제이론과 사회해체이론을 통해서, 그리고 사회자본의 부정적 측면은 차별접촉이론을 통해서 잘 설명될 수 있다. 그리고 사회자본의 이러한 이중성에 중요한 영향을 미치는 문화적ㆍ사회구조적 맥락에 대해서는 아노미이론과 차별기회이론이 통찰력을 제공해 줄 수 있다고 본다. 이 논문은 사회자본 개념이 기존의 범죄학이론에 새롭게 기여하는 바가 거의 없다고 주장한다. 개념 통합을 통한 이론통합의 가능성은 존재하지만 이러한 통합이 과연 논리적으로 가능하며 범죄학 발전에 대해 실질적으로 기여할 가능성이 있는지에 대해서는 여전히 회의가 존재한다. 사회자본이 학문적으로 유용성을 확보하려면 사회자본 ‘이론’을 구성하기 이전에 그 개념을 좁게 잡아 경제적 동기의 차원으로 제한을 할 필요가 있을 것이다. 그리고 이론적 지향점에 따라 사회자본 개념을 달리 활용하면서 사회자본의 맥락 의존성에 대한 세심한 고려가 있어야 한다고 본다.
