중장년 기혼 여성의 손자녀 양육 경험 -돌봄 공백의 가족주의적 대응 = Experiences of Grandmothers Raising their Grandchildren: The Familial Response to the Absence of Care work in Family

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study tries to examine the meaning of the practices of grandmothers raising their grandchildren with special reference to Korean familism. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with 8 grandmothers raising grandchildren to identify the following key issues. First, contrary to the previous studies asserting that grandmothers were not willing to rear their grandchildren, most participants` child-rearing are practiced on their own initiative because of their domesticity and family consciousness. Second, participants reveal the weakening the traditional perceptions of the gender division of labor by emphasizing their daughters` social success and the extension of gender-equality principles. Third, patriarchal family system are likely to be weakened and new type of family relation are reconstructing in the process of child-rearing by grandmothers. These facts demonstrate that the experiences of child-rearing by grandmothers are strongly influenced by familism although it is varied according to their economic conditions, educational level and social experiences.
