여성은 스스로 말 할 수 있는가 : 여성 구술 생애사 연구의 쟁점과 방법론적 논의 = Can Women Speak? : Theoretical and Methodological Issues of Women's Oral History

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 한국에서 지난 10여 년 동안 페미니스트 연구자들이 선호하는 연구 방법이 된 여성 구술 생애사 연구의 이론적, 방법론적 쟁점들을 논의한다. 이를 위하여 먼저 미국과 한국에서 진행되어온 여성 구술 생애사 연구 현황을 살펴보고 여성 구술 생애사 연구의 이론적 쟁점들과 방법론적인 쟁점들을 논의하면서 앞으로의 여성 구술 생애사 연구 방향을 모색해 본다. 미국 여성 구술사 연구는 1970년대부터 시작되어 여성의 경험을 가시화하는 작업에서 1980-1990년대를 통해 이론적 방법론적 논의를 하였고, 현재는 포스트모더니즘의 영향 이후의 여성 구술사 연구의 방향을 모색하고 있다. 한국은 1990년대부터 여성 생애사에 대한 관심이 시작되었고, 일본군 위안부 할머니들의 구술 증언 수집을 통해서 학문적인 논의로 발전되어 2000년대에는 피해자 여성 또는 여성 전사들뿐만 아니라 다양한 지역과 집단의 여성들의 생애사들이 연구되고 있다.
여성 구술 생애사 연구에서 방법론적인 쟁점들에 관해서 이 논문은 여성 구술자의 선정에서의 어려움, 인터뷰 진행 과정의 성격, 인터뷰 결과물에 대한 통제에서의 문제들을 토론한다. 또한 이론적인 쟁점들에 관해서는 여성의 경험, 문화, 주체, 여성 목소리 재현 방식들, 그리고 여성의 권력화에 대한 논의를 한다. 결론적으로 본 연구자는 한국 여성 구술 생애사 연구자들이 여성을 위한 연구를 하고 있지만 여성과 함께 하는 연구를 하기 위해서는 구술사 연구 방식과 과정에 대한 좀 더 성찰적인 사고와 비평적인 인식이 필요하다고 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article discusses the methodological and theoretical issues of women's oral history research in Korea. It attempts an historical overview of American women's oral history research and Korean women's life history research. In the U.S.A.. women's oral history research started in collaboration with the women's movement in the 1970's and developed theoretical and methodological discussions through the 1980's and 1990's. In the period 2000-2010 women's oral history researchers have been searching for the ways to historicize women's experience in the face with plight of postmodernism. In Korea, women's life history through oral history interviewing has been popular among feminist researchers since the 1990's. Women's oral life history research has expanded from interviews of victims and female warriors to ordinary women whose everyday life is in a particular locality and social group.
This article deals with the methodological issues of women's oral historyselecting woman narrators, the interview relationship between interviewer and narrator as a process and an interaction, and control over the product of interviews. It also illustrates the theoretical issues such as women's experience, culture and ubjectivity, modes of representation and interpretation, and empowerment of women. In conclusion, the author argues that a women's oral history researcher should be self-reflective and critical of the methodological and theoretical issues involved in women's oral history so that it can be with women as well as for women.
