The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of school dance instruction on the physical self-efficacy, interpersonal relationship and school adjustment of middle school students. The subjects in this study were the students who took a dance class on a weekly basis at two different schools selected from North Chungcheong Province. After a survey was conducted, the answer sheets from 311 respondents were analyzed. To address the research questions of the study, the statistical package SPSS 18.0 was employed, and t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were carried out. The findings of the study were as follows: First, there were significant differences among the students in physical self-efficacy, interpersonal relationship and school adjustment according to their personal characteristics. Second, there were differences in physical self-efficacy, interpersonal relationship and school adjustment according to the characteristics of their experience of taking school dance classes. Third, physical self-efficacy exerted a significant influence on interpersonal relationship in school dance instruction. Fourth, physical self-efficacy had a significant impact on school adjustment in school dance instruction. In other words, they were more affected in terms of peer relationship and relationship with teachers when their self-perceived physical confidence and satisfaction with physical fitness were higher. The above-mentioned findings indicated that school dance classes had diverse effects on the physical self-efficacy, interpersonal relationship and school adjustment of the middle school students. Therefore profound research efforts should be directed into dance instruction to step up the sound physical and emotional development of adolescents who are in a preparatory stage for life.
