국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 사회자본의 핵심요소인 사회신뢰 특히 일반화된 대인신뢰의 생성과 관련하여 시민사회와 국가제도의 역할을 미시수준에서 탐구하였다. 이를 위해 사회신뢰의 생성과 관련한 사회 중심적 접근과 국가 중심적 접근을 대비하고 각 이론적 시각이 제시하는 미시수준의 함의를 논의하였으며 전국표본설문조사 자료를 활용해 집단가입 및 국가제도의 질에 대한 인식이 사회신뢰에 주는 영향을 분석하였다. 분석결과는 공식단체든 비공식모임이든 집단가입이 사회신뢰에 주는 영향은 미미하거나 거의 없었고 국가기관의 공정성, 정부정책의 비편파성, 공직사회의 정직성 및 정치제도의 민주성에 대한 인식이 사회신뢰에 주는 영향은 상당함을 보여준다. 이러한 결과는 한국의 경우 사회신뢰의 형성에 있어 국가제도의 역할이 시민사회보다 상대적으로 중요할 수 있음을 시사한다.

In this paper we attempt to assess the potential role of the state and civil society in the development of social trust one of the key components of social capital. We contrast society-centered approaches with state-centered ones to social Oust and discuss their individual-level implications. By performing a micro-level analysis on a national sample survey data recently collected in South Korea, we determine the effects of associational membership and perceived quality of state institutions on generalized trust. The analysis shows that associational membership has little impact on generalized trust while perceived fairness, impartiality and honesty of state institutions do have some effects. The findings suggest that in South Korea, state institutions may play a bigger role in generating social trust than voluntary associations.
