유럽 여제(Europa Regina) = Europa Regina: The Allegorical Personification of Europe in the Early Modern Ages and Its Political Rhetoric

국문 초록 (Abstract)

의인화된 유럽의 알레고리는 유럽이라는 자연적, 문화적 단일정체성이 존재한다는 의식의 뚜렷한 표현이자 근대 초 문학으로부터 시각예술에서까지 유럽을 상징화하기 위하여 널리 쓰였던 메타포이다. 본 연구는 15세기 말로부터 17세기에 이르는 기간 동안 의인화된 유럽의 알레고리가 만들어지고 변화되고 퍼져 나아가는 과정을 이해함으로써 궁극적으로 유럽이라는 정체성의 관념이 어떻게 형성되고 발전되었는가에 대한 이해를 심화하고자 한다. 특히 본 연구는 의인화된 유럽의 알레고리가 어떻게 상이한 이해를 가진 정치주체들에 의하여 자신의 명분과 논리를 강화하기 위해 이용되었으며, 그 가운데 재해석과 변용을 겪었는가를 도상학적 연구를 통해 살펴본다. 특히 이를 통해 본 연구는 근대의 유럽의식이 성장하는 국가들의 권력정치와 상호 교호하면서 발전해 나아가는 한 단면을 보여주고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As a most popular allegory in early modern literature and arts, personified Europe (Europa Regina or Europa Virgo) arose from an evolving consciousness among the Europeans of common natural and cultural identity. By discussing how this allegory appeared and spread during the period from the late 15th and early 16th to the 17th century this article endeavors to reach a better understanding of the birth and development of that consciousness. It especially focuses upon how political actors with different political interests and goals appropriated this allegory to bolster their political visions and programs, which caused and prompted its development into different, often mutually contradicting versions. This article thus shows the formation of the modern consciousness of common European identity in interaction with growing secular states.
