다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

In comtemporary societies, there would be few debates about the status of English as 'lingua franca.' Intensifying global flows of people and information have formed new communities and spaces across social and political boundaries. Higher education is one such globalized knowledge space in which new patterns of knowledge, values, and social relationships are emerging. Taking 'English Village'(Paju Camp) and TV English Village'(SBS) as exemplary spaces, this study explores the process in which English is commodified and spatialized in everyday life. 'English Villages' are immersion camps that provide short-term experience of the life and culture of English-speaking countries. IV English Village' is a program which is co-produced with Paju English Village. In this paper I first outline the cultural dynamics of English in Korea. Discussion on the symbolic meanings generated throughout the spaces of English Village will be followed. By doing so, this paper argues that the process of establishing English Village and consuming related television program has not been a matter of the purely endogenous spatial configuration, but rather a complexed response to the forces of globalization. English Village is a mixture of reality and fantasy; educational enterprise and entertainment; local and global; and the strange and the familiar.
