사회자본 형성의 커뮤니케이션 기초 = 대중 매체 이용이 신뢰, 사회 연계망 활동 및 사회정치적 참여에 미치는 영향

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explores the communicative foundation of social capital in Korea. On the basis of a critical review of previous conceptualization of social capital, this study suggests that trust and civic engagement are constitutive of social capital and that the two variables are predictive of socio-political participation. It is assumed that uses of mass communications as well as interpersonal engagement in social associations play a substantial role in bring about social capital. In particular, not only the amounts of using television, newspaper, and internet but also the pattern of uses of media contents are expected to have substantial consequences for the accumulation of social capital. Survey data on a national sample of 2557 adults are analyzed. It is found that the amounts of media use and the media use patterns are predictive of social capital variables. The implications of the findings are discussed in terms of the roles of mass media and interpersonal communications in building social capital in Korean society.
