영성 발달: 대학 교육에서의 개념과 평가 방법 탐색 = Concepts and Assessments of Spiritual Growth in Higher Education

Recent research in college education and student development deals with the inner changes and growth within students, counting the spiritual development of college students as an important aspect of college education. As a critical review paper, this study has two purposes in mind. First, it is to critically review the meaning of spirituality and spiritual development for students in their early adulthood in a college education environment, and second, it is to question how previous studies try to manifest such measures of spirituality into a measurable form. With regard to the first, this study looks at how researchers make a distinction between spirituality and religiosity and searches for existing models on spiritual development that explore these common premises and differences. For the second question, various measures of spirituality and religiosity are reviewed with their respective categories and limitations. Special attention is given to current approaches for assessing spirituality and the spiritual development of college students. In conclusion, several research directions are suggested including the need for clear conceptualization of spirituality and spiritual development, development of measurement tools appropriate for college students, need of empirical support of spirituality, and further studies on the spiritual development model for college students.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 대학 교육과 학생 발달 분야의 연구를 보면 대학생의 내적 성장과 발달에 대한 관심이 증가하면서 대학생의 영성 발달을 대학 교육의 책무영역 중 하나로 다루고 있다. 본 연구는 성인 초기 대학생 발달을 다룬 이론과 연구들을 검토하면서 대학 교육이라는 환경과 성인 초기라는 발달의 시기에 있는 대학생들의 영성과 영성 발달은 무엇을 의미하는지 살피고 있다. 더불어 영성과 영성 발달의 의미를 어떻게 도구적 정의로 변환시킬 수 있는지 그간 개발된 영성 및 신앙과 관련된 측정도구들과 접근방법을 탐색하고 있다. 먼저 영성 발달의 의미와 개념과 관련해서는 영성과 종교성을 구분한 후 영성 발달의 다양한 모델 간의 유사성과 차이를 검토한다. Fowler나 Parks처럼 영성 발달을 단계적으로 구분하여 대학생 이해를 돕는 접근도 있지만 Love와 Talbot처럼 발달 단계를 제시하지는 않으나 대학 현장의 경험적 자료를 기초로 영성 발달의 원리를 제시하는 경우도 다루고 있다. 영성 발달은 모든 사람에게 공통된 과제이고 다차원적이며 통전적이라는 점, 대학생의 경우 영성 발달은 자신의 존재와 삶의 목적을 포함하는 포괄적 개념으로 이해해야 한다는 점은 영성과관련된 다양한 이론이 공유하는 부분이다. 영성 발달의 측정과 평가와 관련해서는 다양한 평가 접근의 유형을 살펴보고 각 접근의 특징과 한계를 다루며, 특히 최근 대학생의 영성과 영성 발달을 어떻게 평가하는지를 중점적으로 살피고 있다. 신앙과 영성 관련 측정 도구가 이미 많이 개발되었음에도 불구하고 한계가 있는 것은 도구의 이론적 근거가 약하거나 제한된 개념만을 다룬다는 점, 측정적 양호도가 높지 않다는 방법적 한계 외에 도구의 활용과 해석 면에서의 어려움도 지적되었다. 본 논문의 결론에서는 영성이 대학 교육을 통해 어떻게 발달할 수 있는지 영성과 대학 교육을 연결시키면서 이에 대한 답을 얻기 위해 대학생의 영성과 영성 발달에 대한 명료한 개념화, 대학생에게 적합한 영성 발달 측정 도구의 개발, 교육 현장에서 얻어진 경험적 자료로 뒷받침되는 대학생 영성 발달의 모델 개발이 선행되어야 함을 제시하고 있다.
