This paper presents an ethnographic study on the meanings of friend to 3 year-old children in Sun Class at F Kindergarten, and explores the tasks they perform to form friendships, as well as their teacher`s teaching methods relative to forming the meaning of friend. The research findings reveal 1) to these young children the meanings of friend include those who resemble me, play with me, I like, help me, are close to me, and can be ``us`` with me; 2) that young children have a set of tasks to tackle to form friendships such as (a) in the early days of the school year, being at a distance from parents, taking an interest in friends, getting to know friends, and not having their way all the time, (b) in the middle period of the school year, getting along, liking, and not taking sides, and (c) in the late days of the school year, getting along well and cooperating. 3) The teacher employed general teaching methods and special ones for certain periods to help young children form friendships. The general teaching methods were consistent regardless of the time periods, nonetheless, special teaching methods were prominent in the early, middle, and late period of the school year. The findings show that the meanings of friend in the friendships of the three-year-old children change a little with time passage and also reflect their social and cultural contexts. The findings imply that parents and teachers should understand the various meanings of friend young children have and their tasks in each period so that they can provide the children with assistance in forming friendships in each period in a timely fashion.
