Emigration from the Philippines shows gender discriminative characteristics. This is not intrinsic to the Philippines, but rather is closely related to the immigration regulations and the economic and socio-cultural circumstances of the country visited. This paper analyzes the situation of three specific Filipina groups as illustrative cases of gendered migration in S. Korea: the first group is mostly made up of factory workers and care workers, undocumented and living unobtrusively as ‘illegal’ aliens in S. Korea; the second group comprises women who hold entertainment visas and make repeated short visits to Korea to perform in live bands; the third group are married to Korean men and are thus eligible to be naturalized as Korean nationals.
The first group lacks true citizenship because undocumented workers do not qualify for any legal status, and although the second group, Filipina entertainers, have an opportunity to enhance their economic status, their working contracts entail a significant loss of freedom. Instead of being a process to authenticate their marriages, the grace period for applying for naturalization has functioned more as a mean to consign Filipina marriage migrants to unequal family relations. Obtaining nationality also offers no guarantee of achieving cultural citizenship. A kind of chain migration among close family members is the main mechanism through which undocumented stays are prolonged, and although a type of repeat migration is allowed for entertainment visa holders this is offset by their indentured working conditions. Marriage migrants who are naturalized, and stay long enough, could possibly take a hub role in the hub and spoke network, being followed by other Filipina wives and also by Filipino laborers.
