세월호 참사 1년 동안의 언론보도를 통해 드러난 언론매체의 정치적 경도

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 세월호 참사와 관련된 1년 동안의 언론보도를 이용하여 여론의 흐름과 언론매체의 정치적 경도(partisan slant)를 측정하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 논문에서 정의하는 여론은 언론보도를 통해 확인되는 정치담론의 움직임을 말하며 언론매체의 정치적 경도란 해당시기 여론의 흐름을 통제한 뒤 지속적으로 관측되는 매체의 정치적 성향이다. 여론과 정치적 경도 측정을 위해서 본 논문은 자동화된 텍스트 분석기법과 베이지안 추정을 결합하여 28개 언론매체(19개 신문사와 9개의 방송사)의 보도내용을 분석하였다. 이를 통해 세월호 참사 1년 동안 언론보도를 통해 드러난 여론의 흐름이 급격한 변화를 보였으며 참사 초기의 정부비판적 여론이 대통령의 대국민 담화와 두 번의 선거(6.4 지방선거와 7.30 재보궐선거)를 거치면서 급격하게 약화되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 여론의 흐름을 통제한 뒤 각 언론매체의 정치적 경도를 확인한 결과, CBS(라디오방송)와 한겨레신문, 그리고 경향신문이 참사 이후 1년 동안 정부비판적 내용을 지속적으로 보도한 반면 문화일보, TV조선, MBC, 채널A, 디지털타임스, 전자신문, 파이낸셜뉴스, 그리고 매일경제는 상대적으로 야당에 비판적인 내용을 지속적으로 보도한 것으로 확인되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper presents a measure of media slant for South Korean news agencies focusing on news reports on the Sewol ferry disaster. The included news agencies are nineteen newspapers, four terrestrial broadcasting companies, and five comprehensive programming channels. In this paper, I define media slant as persistent and distinguishable political leanings of a specific news agency in its news reports after controlling for a public opinion trend. In order to jointly estimate public opinion and media slant, I first extract the relative partisan phrase frequency from news reports using parties’ press releases, and then employ Bayesian hierarchical state space model to decompose the relative partisan phrase frequency into public opinion and media slant. Utilizing one year long news reports on the Sewol ferry disaster, this paper found that public opinion has dramatically shifted during the first four months from the ferry disaster and that three news agencies(CBS, Hangyereh Shinmun, and Kyunghang Shinmun) are most critical of the government and the ruling party while Munhwa Ilbo, TV Chosun, MBC, Channel A, Digital Times, Junja Shinmun, Financial News, and Mail Economy are least critical of the government and highly critical of the opposition party.
