호러스 G. 언더우드의 선교지 결정과 출발 = Horace G. Underwood`s Decision and Departure for the Mission Field

Horace G. Underwood (1859.7.19-1916.10.12) initially considered going to India, until some time before he graduated from the New Brunswick Theological Seminary. In the early part of his first year in the Seminary, he determined to devote his whole life to foreign missionary labor. However, he struggled to decide which field he ought to enter after attending the 4th Inter-Seminary Missionary Alliance Convention (1883). A few months later, in response to Rijutei’s appeal, he applied to the Board of Foreign missions to be appointed and sent as a clerical missionary to Korea. This article investigates the presence of the Japanese officers who appear in his letter and the idea that they took the train together based on a comparison of the records written by Nozu Michitsura (1841~1908) and Underwood’s letter. The statement that they would be taking a steam ship together in San Francisco is also verified as a historical fact. Thus, the paper examines the process by which Underwood came to choose Korea as his mission field and left the United States to work as a missionary. Although much research has already been carried out on Underwood, many aspects have unavoidably been overlooked or left out. In such cases, it can prove fruitful to both re-examine the existing research and to conduct new research.
