유아의 위험성 감수놀이를 위한 실외환경의 특성:영국의 유아원을 중심으로 = The distinctive characters of outdoor environment for young children’s risky play

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of the following study is to examine the distinctive characters of the external environment of the English preschool’s risk-taking play. Data sources included participant observation with three- year-olds attending English preschool, and interviews with the teachers. Grounded theory was adopted to analyze the data. Findings show, distinctive characters of outdoor environment for young children’s risk-taking play, which included diverse surfaces and geographical features, secretive places and their atmosphere, facility and resources that test limits, and the natural object and dangerous tools. Such results may help recognize the importance of the environment that fulfills the young children’s adventurous desire, and provide a deeper understanding of the outdoor environment’s potential capabilities to safely test and develop young children’s abilities.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 영국의 공립유아원에서 나타난 유아의 위험성 감수놀이를 위한 실외환경의 특성을 분석하여 우리나라 유아교육기관의 실외환경구성에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히고자 하는 것이다. 특히 위험성을 경험하는 위험성 감수놀이에 큰 가치를 두고 있는 유럽 국가들 중 하나인 영국의 위험성 감수놀이에 대한 실외환경의 실체를 파악하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 통해 우리나라의 유아교육현장에서 위험성 감수놀이를 위한 실외환경적 지원의 대안을 구체적으로 마련할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 교사의 위험성 감수놀이 지도를 위해 함양할 수 있는 실질적인 대안들을 교사교육 차원에서도 모색해 볼 수 있을 것이라 기대한다. 이를 위하여 영국 공립유아원에 다니는 만 3세 유아들을 대상으로 참여관찰을 하였으며 교사를 대상으로 면담을 실시하였다. 수집한 자료를 분석하기 위하여 근거이론을 참고하였다. 연구결과, 유아의 위험성 감수놀이를 위한 실외환경의 특성은 다양한 지형, 교사의 시선으로부터 벗어난 공간, 한계를 시험하는 시설과 자원, 위험성을 내포한 자연물과 도구로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과는 교사의 준비 없이 유아가 자발적으로 놀이하는 ‘준비되지 않은 위험놀이’가 아니라 교사가 ‘준비한 위험성 감수놀이’에 대한 실외환경의 잠재성에 대해 깊이 있는 이해를 제공할 수 있으리라 본다.
