저소득층 대학생의 대학생활 적응과정 = Low-income Students' Adaptation to University

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 저소득층 가정 배경에도 불구하고 성공적으로 명문대에 입학한 대학생들의 대학생활 적응과정을 분석함으로써, 대학교육의 한계와 개선 방향을 모색하기 위한 것이다. 이러한 연구 목적을 실현하기 위하여 삼성꿈장학재단의 차세대 리더 육성 장학금을 지원받은 7명의 저소득층 대학생들을 대상으로 사례연구를 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 연구 참여자들은 개인적 강점과 학교교육의 시너지 효과에 힘입어 사회적 약자 배려 전형 등을 통해 명문대 진학에 성공했지만, 입학 후에는 출발선 격차와 이를 강화하는 대학교육 환경 등으로 인하여 학업적, 사회적으로 소속 대학에 원만하게 적응하지 못하고 있었다. 이는 대학들이 기회균등을 학생 선발 과정에만 한정하고, 교육의 과정과 결과 면에서 보장하기 위한 노력을 기울이지 않은 채 주류 학생 중심(majorities-oriented)의 교육을 실시하고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 결과는 대학교육의 책무범위에 대한 근본적인 문제를 제기하며, 대학교육을 기관이나 교수가 아닌 학생 중심으로 전환함으로써 대학 내 약자를 배려하는 교육시스템을 구축할 필요성을 시사한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to explore the implications of the recent increase of students from lowincome families at prestigious Korean universities dominated by those from middle-class families. A case study design is used to gain an in-depth understanding of experiences of college students from low-income families who received a merit-based scholarship from Samsung Dream Scholarship Foundation between 2010 and 2012. Semi-structured interviews of seven students were conducted for the date collection. The results suggest that most of the participants have had difficulty integrating themselves into the academic and social systems of the university due to their low socio-economic status and lack of university support. Also, the ineffective operation of the equal opportunity policy has added challenges to the students. Most universities have only applied the policy to the process of student selection and have thus ignored the challenge facing the students from low-income families in the process of education. As a result, most of them have failed the promise of equal opportunity for higher education. Overall, this study’s findings highlight the crucial roles of university education and student support programs in the experiences of students from low-income families. Furthermore, they suggest that Korean universities pay attention to the needs of students with varied backgrounds and especially improve the support for minority students.
