The purpose of this study was to examine in what situations parents of infants, toddlers or preschoolers provided their preschool children with smartphones and how they looked at providing smartphones. Currently using smartphones of infants, toddlers or preschoolers getting increased and the age of children start to do that at earlier ages. Children who use smartphones are not the owners of the smartphones. They are the possession of their parents, and whether infants, toddlers or preschoolers use smartphones or not depends on the decision of their parents. Meanwhile, in most earlier studies, a quantitative research was implemented by questionnaire method to find out the exposure of infants, toddlers and preschoolers to smartphones, but they failed to offer detailed explanation on that. In order to determine what measures should be taken to let young children use smartphones properly, it’s not just enough to investigate their exposure to smartphone. How parents allow their children to use smartphones and what they think of it should closely be examined. Two research questions were posed in this study:
      1. In what situations do parents provide their preschool children with smartphones?
      2. What do they think about their children’s use of smartphones?
14 selected parents who had one or more infants, toddlers or preschoolers were interviewed in depth, and it seemed that the parents took a liberal view of child rearing.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, there were largely four different situations that the parents provided their children with smartphones: for the purpose of control, to serve as substitutive parents, as a reward or to satisfy children’s needs.
Second, the parents made rules for their children to abide by after they provided them with smartphones.
Third, most of the parents took both positive and negative views of their children’s smartphone use. At that point of time, the survey was conducted to look for connections between their view of child rearing and awareness of their children’s smartphone use. A mixed research was implemented to determine the relationship between the two, but there wasn’t any significant link between them.
Although the effort produced no significant results, this study is of great significance in terms of research methodology in that it tried to apply another research method during data collection, which wasn’t initially planned in the stage of research design.
Fourth, the parents asked for parent education about the right use of smartphone among children.
The way the parents looked at their children’s smartphone use was various. Nowadays, parents allow their children to use smartphones due to their changing values and view of education, and children start to do that at earlier ages. This fact suggests that more parent education should be offered to prevent infants, toddlers or preschoolers from smartphone overuse.
