Media logic means ‘the news values and the storytelling techniques the media makeuse of to take advantage of their own medium and its format, and to be competitive in the ongoing struggle to capture people’s attention’. A field in which media logic plays a central role is the mediatization literature. Mediatization refers to ‘the process whereby society to an increasing degree is submitted to, or becomes dependent on, the media and their logic’(Takens et. al., 2013). We understand mediatization as ‘a process aecting all parts of society, either directly or indirectly, albeit to different degrees within or across different societies’(Zeh & Hopmann, 2013). Three content characteristics corresponding with important news values are prominent in the media logic debate: journalists’ preference for (1) personalized coverage , (2) contest and game coverage and (3) negative coverage(Takens et al., 2013). Personalized coverage refers to ‘a heightened focus on individual politicians and a diminished focus on parties, organizations, and institutions’ in the media. Contest coverage portrays politics as a political contest between political actors with limited attention for the issues at stake. In an overview of key findings regarding negative coverage, Takens et al.(2013) conclude that ‘with very few exceptions … the existing body of evidence hints to predominantly increasing, and overarching negativity towards individual political protagonists and parties’. The tone of the news has been shown to become more negative in the United States and Germany.
