청소년기 자아정체성 연구의 대안적 접근: 서술적 정체성 발달 = Adolescents’ identity development: Narrative approach and its implications for Korean adolescents

Identity formation has been considered one of the pivotal developmental tasks that adolescents must accomplish. Since Erikson, many psychologists have proposed various techniques to measure adolescents’identity development. Although status approach has been most popular, some scientists have criticized this approach for being too reductionistic, being non-developmental, and ignoring personal evaluations of life histories. Recently, narrative approach in evaluating identity formation has received keen attentions from scholars as an alternative. Although the number of empirical studies are still few, this approach can be a promising method in measuring identity development during adolescence. Typical methodologies for this approach and the ideas of researches for Korean adolescents are discussed.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

자아정체성 발달은 Erikson 이래 청소년 연구가들이 집중하고 있는 청소년기 최중요 발달과제 중 하나이다. 기존의 많은 연구들은 주로 유형론에 근거한 정체성 지위에 따른 접근방식을 취해왔었다. 하지만 이러한 접근은 사회문화적 맥락과 정체성의 발달적 측면, 그리고 경험에 대한 개인의 해석을 제대로 반영할 수 없다는 비판을 받아왔다. 최근 정체성 발달 연구에 자서전 기법을 활용한 서술적 접근의 적용이 두드러지고 있는데, 이는 개인으로 하여금 자신의 발달사를 기술하게끔 하고 이 내용을 분석하는 접근이다. 자아정체성 연구의 서술적 접근은 기존의 지위적 접근의 한계를 극복하고, 보다 본질적인 자아정체성 발달의 측면들을 풍부하게 담아낸다는 점에서 앞으로의 청소년기 정체성 연구의 핵심적인 방법론으로 등장할 가능성이 높다. 본 연구는 이러한 대안적 기법의 장점과 방식을 소개하고, 이를 국내 청소년들에게 어떻게 적용할 것인지에 대해 논의하였다.
