This study was to investigate the teachers` needs and utilization of science performance assessment in the elementary schools. The subjects of this study were 203 elementary school teachers and the questionnaire used for this stduy consisted of 8 items. The results of this study show that teachers rely on existing items when developing assessment items. They feel lack of diversity and systematic evaluation method about science performance assessment items. As for the science performance assessment to be developed, they required a thematic evaluation rather than an as existing one. Especially they required science performance assessment materials with clear evaluation criteria, and evaluation feedback. To improve science performance assesment, materials which assess students` learning process and emphasize students` inquiry skills need to be developed and distributed. Also clear guidelines and examples for evaluation criteria and feedback should be provided.
