The official textbook has been a powerful source in the country. Nonetheless, the development of textbook in physical education seems to fail to demonstrate any specifically significant revision. The purpose of this study is to examine the construction process of the formal organization and content of the previous and currrent textbook and the procedure of textbook development and explore the transformability, and thus suggest the new orientation in which the physical education textbook would be developed. The study, concerning the development of textbook, examined transformation of formal organization of physical education textbook, transformation of content structure and transformation of the conceptions of textbook First, transformation of formal organization of the textbook The department of education has been so intensive to develop the resourceful and motivating textbook that the transformation of formal organization of textbook which would be revealed in the 7th textbook is expected as quite so significant Second, transformation of content structure of the textbook. The textbook which has been developed over six times shows seldom a significant transformation of textbook. It would not be desirabIe if the revision of the content might not follow the creative transformation of formal organization. For teachers as well as for students, the transformation of the textbook which could fulfill their needs and be useful would be required Third, transformation of conceptions of the textbook. It is necessary to conceive the textbook as resources for instruction and learning to make the formal curriculum concrete. In order to recognize such notion, the policy about textbook should be shifted to legitimate the form of authorized textbook out of the form of official textbook, and the publication of textbook needs to open to the publication market.
