베이비붐 세대의 가족갈등대처방식이 삶의 질에 미치는 영향 = Family-Conflict Coping Strategies and Life Satisfaction Among Baby Boomers: Focusing on the Moderating Effects of Depression and Self-esteem

The purpose of this study was to investigate how life satisfaction and the ability to cope with family conflict are affected by depression and self-esteem. The subjects were 1,005 baby boomers who were experiencing family conflict out of 1,773 baby boomers who were selected in the Fifth Korean Welfare Panel Study (2010). The resulting data were analyzed with the statistical program AMOS 7.0 in order to produce structural equation modeling. They were also analyzed with an Aroian test to measure mediating effects. The major findings were as follows: First, positive coping strategies brought to family conflicts were negatively related to the experience of depression. Second, positive coping strategies brought to family conflicts were positively related to self-esteem. Third, mitigated depression was positively related to life satisfaction. Fourth, reinforced self-esteem was positively related to life satisfaction. That is, positive coping strategies for dealing with family conflict were negatively related to depression and also positively related to self-esteem. At the same time, those variables were positively related to life satisfaction. In brief, in this group of baby boomers, depression and self-esteem were revealed to function as mediators in the relationship between coping strategies for dealing with family conflict and life. Finally, we discuss the practical and political implications of recovering family conflict and enhancing life satisfaction and end by considering the limitations of this study well as some suggestions for future investigation.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 5차년도(2010년) 한국복지패널에서 추출한 베이비부머 1,773명 중 가족갈등을 경험한 1,005명을 대상으로 그들이 선택한 갈등대처방식이 심리적 변인인 자아존중감과 우울을 매개로 어떻게 그들의 삶의 질에 영향을 미쳤는지를 살펴보고자 이행되었다. 연구방법은 AMOS 7.0 버전을 사용하여 구조방적식모델분석을 실시한 후, 이러한 매개효과가 통계적으로 유의한지를 검증하기 위해 Sobel(1982) 검증 중 Baron와 Kenny(1986)에 의해 활용된 Aroian 검증방법을 적용하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 베이비붐 세대의 긍정적인 가족갈등대처방식은 우울에 부적 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 베이비붐 세대의 긍정적인 가족갈등대처방식은 자아존중감에 정적 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 완화된 우울은 그들의 삶의 질에 정적 영향을 미쳤다. 넷째, 강화된 자아존중감은 그들의 삶의 질에 정적 영향을 미쳤다. 즉 베이비붐 세대의 긍정적인 가족갈등대처방식은 우울을 완화시키는 동시에 자아존중감을 강화시켜 그들의 삶의 질에 긍정적 영향을 미쳤다. 결과적으로 베이비붐 세대의 가족갈등대처방식과 삶의 질의 관계에서 심리적 변인인 우울과 자아존중감의 매개효과를 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 근거로 베이비붐 세대의 가족갈등을 극복하고 삶의 질을 높이기 위한 실천 및 정책적 함의를 제시하고 이 연구의 제한점, 그리고 추후 연구에서 고려할 점을 논의하였다.
