물화된 전쟁과 제국의 시선 = －황석영의 「무기의 그늘」론－

This paper focuses on the ideological characteristics of pseudo-omniscient perspective in Hwang Sok-Yong’s The Shadow of Arms. As many characters cross over, this novel seems to be in polyphonic modes. However, the omniscient narrator gives information to readers which characters cannot know by themselves. When we recognize this novel takes place in the colonial Danang in Vietnam, the problematic characteristics of this specific perspective become prominent. As the colonial city is a bifurcated, binary, black-and-white place, characters in each district seldom see each other. Danang divides into the new city and the old city. Between them, there is an internal border. This is the site of adventure. Characters cross the line, and are face with the unknown, often the enemy. The story enters a space of danger, surprises, suspense. Generally speaking, the colonial city cannot be represented totally but the limited perspective may be suitable. In The Shadow of Arms, the narrator has the absolute power, but characters fall into as replaceable commodities. The discrepancy between form and content is clear. As Jameson argues, ideological message can be vehiculated by the form of a work rather than by its content. Although the narrator blames the cruelty of american imperialism in Vietnam, the major form of this novel or the pseudo-omniscient perspective resembles that of the empire.
