The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) was established in 1876 and in three decades grew into an encyclopedic museum with six departments. Its Asian art collection is considered one of the finest in the West both in scope and quality. MFA houses 1,045 objects of Korean art, and all were acquired as gifts or purchases from donated funds. By type, ceramics rank first occupying almost half of the entire Korean art collection while by period, Goryeo Dynasty's objects constitute more than one third. The first accession into the Korean art collection is a group of 112 pottery items purchased from Edward Sylvester Morse in 1892. Most of them are earthenwares of Silla and Gaya period acquired during his stay in Japan. MFA's Korean art collection contains 112 paintings (including twenty-five Buddhist paintings) donated by William Sturgis Bigelow, Francisco Ernest Fenellosa, Charles Goddard Weld, Denman Waldo Ross, Charles Bain Hoyt, and Keith McLeod, to list several important donors. Major expansion to MFA's celadon and white porcelain collections occurred in 1950 with the bequests of 242 items from the aforementioned Hoyt. His total bequests and gifts comprise almost one third of the entire Korean holdings. MFA's Korean pre-historic artifact collections were formed in 1977 with the purchase from a Korean-American collector while MFA's Korean modern to contemporary artworks including the late Joseon-period screens and contemporary ceramics were mostly acquired during the 2000's.
