The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between children`s social com-petence and interactive peer play style of young children in Kindergarten. The subjects of two hundred 3, 4, and 5 year-old-children and their teachers responded. The data is analysed with t - test, one way ANOVA(Scheffe`s test), correlation, and multiple regression. The findings of this study is as follows: First, self-efficiency, which is a component of social competence, was shown to be higher in girls, while there were no difference by sex of children in other components of social competence including leadership, sensitivity, and emotional stability. Secondly, leadership and self-efficiency were shown to have positive relationship with the interactive peer play style of the children. Thirdly, highly self-efficient children were less likely to interrupt other children`s play, while overly sensitive children have shown greater tendency to interrupt other children`s play. Finally, disruption of play has been found to be related to emotional stability and self-efficiency; children with high self-efficiency were less likely to experience play disruption. These results suggest that interactive peer play has high impact on development of social competence in young children, and that there should be efforts given to provide children with interactive peer play environment for them to develop social competence.
