그림책 파라텍스트: 판형, 종이, 페이지, 제본(2) = Paratext in picturebook: shape&size book, paper, page, bookbinding(2)

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Range of paratext has extended wider with the elements of book, such as size&shape of book, paper, page and book binding based on as an object than paratext Gerard Genette categorized, title page, inside title page and endpaper. Paratext in physical is the feature from construction of book and might be said potential language to make signification in picturebook more than in any other media. Size&shape book is physical form of book in word. It does significating even in formal square format with size, proportion, texture and etc. In the mean time, informal shape can be activated as iconic sign. Paper, usually the space showing or conveying word or image text, can be iconic and formative sign. For instance, black paper indicates the night and semi-transparent paper represents dawn or mist. Page, ignored mostly, is one of the most vitalizing elements with playing role of characters and background. And even more it can be changed from iconic sign to formative with turning pages so be organic interaction. Book binding is not making paper together but also showing the way of pages placed and how to readers read. Binding type causes dual narrative going on and off or leading un-leaner reading way.
Paratext in picturebook is the third language with word and image. It is not important that it belong to physical aspect or not. It is the potential language we should recognize. We can not find that every single paratext make signification in every picturebook text, of course. There are no painting painted with every colour in exist and no novel with every word written in it.
Paratext as the third text will be promised language maiking picturebook in variety way also elements standing out picturebook's feature and a media itself.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

그림책에서 파라텍스트는 주네트가 분류한 범위, 표지, 면지, 속표지 등과 더불어 책이라는 물성 그 자체가 가지고 있는 물리적 파라텍스트, 판형, 종이, 페이지, 제본 등에까지 범위가 확장된다. 특히 물리적 파라텍스트는 그림책이 가지고 있는 본연의 특성이자 다른 어느 매체보다도 적극적으로 의미 작용하는 그림책의 잠재적 언어라 할 수 있다. 판형은 말 그대로 책의 물리적 형태이다. 정형적 형태인 장방형일 때조차 그 크기, 비례, 촉감 등을 통해 의미작용하고, 비정형적 형태일 때는 도상적 기호로 작용한다. 글과 그림텍스트를 담는 종이는 단순히 텍스트를 가시화시키는 공간 또는 옮기는 것이 그 역할의 전부가 아니라 그 자체가 도상적기호로 또는 조형적기호로 의미 작용할 수 있다. 까만 종이는 까만 밤을, 반투명지는 안개나 새벽녘 등을 표현할 수 있기 때문이다. 가장 당연시 여겨졌던 페이지조차 그림책에서는 적극적인 의미작용의 요소로 작용한다. 페이지 자체가 배경이 되고 등장인물이 될 뿐만 아니라 뒤 페이지와 연계를 통해 조형적 기호에서 도상적 기호로, 또는 페이지 넘기는 행위와 더불어 한 그림책 텍스트에서 조차 그 의미가 변하는 유기적인 의미 작용을 할 수 있다. 제본은 페이지를 묶는 역할에 머무는 것이 아니라 페이지가 보여 지는 방법, 또는 독자가 책을 읽는 동선을 바꿔주는 역할을 하는 파라텍스트이다. 제본에 의해 두 개의 서사가 동시에 진행되다가 한 개의 서사로 합해지고 다시 분리될 수도 있고, 페이지 전체를 한눈에 볼 수 있도록 하여 비선형적인 독서의 동선을 만들 수도 있다.
그림책에서 파라텍스트는 글과 그림과 더불어 제3의 텍스트이자 잠재적인 언어이다. 모든 그림책 작품에서 제3의 언어가 본래의 역할 이외의 의미 작용하는 것을 볼 수 있는 것은 아니다. 하지만 그림에서 모든 색을 쓰지도, 모든 단어를 한 소설 속에서 다 사용하지 않는 것과 같은 이치이다.
제3의 언어로서 파라텍스트는 그림책이 더욱 활성화 될 수 있는 가능성이 될 것이며, 가장 그림책의 매체적 특성을 부각시키는 요소가 될 것이다.
