국문 초록 (Abstract)

범죄두려움의 원인에 관한 연구는 그동안 성, 연령, 범죄피해의 경험 등 개인 특성 변인들의 영향력에 주목했었지만, 최근의 연구에서는 개인이 거주하는 지역의 특성이 그 중요한 요인이 된다는 점을 강조했다. 그러한 점에서 지역사회 경찰활동 또한 범죄두려움을 감소하는 데 기여할 수 있다는 주장이 제기되어 왔다. 본 연구는 지역사회 경찰활동이 지역성원들의 범죄두려움에 미치는 영향력을 경험적으로 검증해 보고자 하는 데에 목적이 있다. 이 연구에서는 지역사회 경찰활동이 지역사회의 무질서 등 지역문제 해결에 공헌하고 지역주민들의 경찰에 대한 친밀감과 만족도를 높여 지역에서의 범죄피해 위험을 크게 감소시킴으로써 범죄두려움을 낮출 것이라는 연구모델을 제시하고, 대구지역의 이웃 단위의 40개 지역 400명을 조사대상으로 하는 연구를 시도했다. 연구 결과는 본 연구의 가설을 지지하는 것으로 나타나, 지역사회 경찰활동이 범죄두려움의 감소에 크게 기여할 수 있음을 제시하였다.

Research on fear of crime have focused on the effects of individual factors such as victimization, vulnerability, and indirect victimization. In recent studies, in contrast to the research focusing on individual vulnerability and victimization, macro-level researchers have been concerned with uncovering community-level factors in explaining fear of crime. Among these, community policing has been emphasized as a central strategy in reducing fear of crime. This study evaluates whether community policing can reduce community members' fear of crime. This study constructs a model in which community policing influences perceptions of neighborhood incivilities and attitudes toward police, these, in turn, affect risk of crime, and perceived risk of crime enhances fear of crime.
This study provides a multilevel analysis evaluating on the effects of community policing on individual's fear of crime. Using data from 400 individuals living in 40 Daegu neighborhood areas, a model is estimated. Results confirm a model and show that increased levels of community policing have important effects on reducing risk of crime and fear of crime.
