대전 매춘공간의 형성과 변화

The present study considers the formation and expansion of red-light (prostitution) districts transformed in parallel with modern and contemporary changes in urban space in Daejeon and Chungnam, and examines the decline and extinction of such districts, so as to lay a foundation for analyzing local red-light districts.
The first brothel Chuniljeong appeared in public urban space during the Japanese colonial era. Going through with the liberation and the Korean War, the red-light district started to move beyond the old city center and expand into the western part of the city. The red-light districts continued to exist, being called ‘specific areas’ or ‘military camp towns’ during the Park Jung-hee regime, and took root in the city center in line with the geomorphological transformation of sex industry.
‘Yucheon-dong Texas Village’ was formed following the relocation of Seobu Intercity Bus Terminal to Yucheon-dong, which had been a summer resort. While going through with the national foreign exchange crisis, or the so-called ‘IMF economic crisis’, local red-light districts adopted the ‘Miari-style’ system, giving birth to a range of infringements upon personal rights. This resulted from the social space being contaminated by the force of market combined with construction funds taking advantage of an abstract ideology advocating safety, high quality and cleanliness. Space reflects and results from the power in society. As a consequence, prostitutes have been placed on the borderline between inclusion and exclusion, which reinforces the social exclusion.
