The goal of reading strategy instruction is to help students become self regulated readers. Essential to this goal is helping students attain knowledge about strategies for accomplishing reading tasks and goals, metacognitive awareness of reading processes, background knowledge of real world, motivation to use reading strategies. Several models of reading strategy instruction have been proposed. Good models of reading strategy instruction are based on constructivist principles. Reading strategy instruction based on endogenous constructivism is focused student centered exploration of instructional principles. Reading strategy instruction based on exogenous constructivism is focused more heavily on modeling and explanation. Reading strategy instruction based on dialectical constructivism rely more on scaffolded assistance. The dialectical constructivism lies in between endogenous and exogenous constructivism and is bsed on Vygotskian principles that readers gradually internalize reading strategies through guided scaffolding from more knowledgeable others as they engage in the strategic processing of text. The key aspect of reading strategy instruction model is the creation of a environment for motivated strategy use. Such environment is created by the recursive actions of explicit instruction, reducing processing demands, and providing opportunities for students to verbalize strategic processes.
