The present study purposed to examine changes in the concepts of reading and readers caused by electronic media and new culture rising with such changes. For this purpose, we reviewed the history of media, considered the status and characteristics of electronic media in contemporary society, and analyzed the exact meanings of changes brought by new media. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, in the age of electronic media, readers can get necessary information at any time and in any place and expand the scope of reading as much as they want. Second, in order to be settled as readers appropriate for the age of electronic media, they must assume an active attitude motivating themselves to read and approaching materials that they need. Third, they should be active prosumers who criticize the contents of texts, reason them comprehensively and write articles rather than just understanding the texts. In the age of electronic media, reading has multi facial layers. If electronic media make further progress and the age of ubiquity comes, books may lose their authority to some degree but still they will maintain their status as important media of reading and coexist with visual media and reading matters in the form of electronic media. Thus, to be readers in the age of electronic media, it is essential to develop composite abilities to choose an appropriate reading method, acquire information, criticize contents, reason comprehensively, and write articles.
