노인의 자원봉사 참여가 신체적 건강, 우울, 사회적 지지 및 삶의 의미에 미치는 영향 = Benefits of Volunteering to Physical health, Depression, Social Support, and Meaning in Life among Older Adults

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of volunteering on physical health,depression, social support and meaning in life among older adults. Data were collected by using structured questionnaires, before beginning of the voluntary work and again 12 months after its initialization, from older volunteers and non-volunteers. As a result of the study, older volunteers had better physical health than baseline by the end of 12 months of voluntary work, but statistical significance was not found. Significant interaction effects between time and groups were not found for the outcome variables, but older volunteers had significantly lower level of depression and higher level of social support than non-volunteers. It is the first prospective study in Korea that investigate the positive influence of volunteering on health status in older adults. To clarify the causal effect of voluntary work, it is warranted to perform additional longitudinal intervention study with control group.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 노인의 자원봉사 참여가 신체적 건강, 우울, 사회적 지지, 삶의 의미에 미치는 영향을 확인하고자시도되었다. 연구 대상자는 매주 1회 이상 가정방문을 통하여 취약계층 독거노인의 건강과 안녕을 확인하는건강관리 지지자로서 자원봉사에 참여한 노인 28명과 자원봉사에 참여하지 않은 노인대학 재학생 27명을 대상으로 하였다. 자료수집은 자원봉사활동 시작 전과 자원봉사활동 참여 12개월 후에 수행되었다. 연구결과, 자원봉사 참여노인은 자원봉사 참여 12개월 후에 신체적 건강상태가 호전되었으나 통계적 유의성은 없었다. 자원봉사 참여 유무에 따른 집단과 시점 간에 신체적 건강상태, 우울, 사회적 지지, 삶의 의미에 대한 상호작용 효과는 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 없었으나, 자원봉사 참여노인은 비참여 노인에 비해 우울은 유의하게 낮고 사회적 지지는 유의하게 높았다. 본 연구는 자원봉사 참여가 노인의 건강에 미치는 긍정적 영향을 전향적으로파악한 국내 최초의 연구로서, 향후 장기적 종단연구를 통하여 자원봉사 참여가 노인의 건강에 미치는 인과적관계성을 재확인해 보는 것이 필요할 것이다.
