사회적 지지의 수준과 차원이 노인 우울에 미치는 영향 = The Effect of Levels and Dimensions of Social Support on Geriatric Depression

Social support, which plays a role in alleviating geriatric depression, can be divided into family, friend, and community levels in terms of its sources on the one hand, and into structural and functional dimensions in terms of its contents and forms on the other. This study has attempted to examine the relationships between social support of structural and functional dimensions at family, friend, and community levels and depression among the elderly in Daejeon. The results of this study showed that the degree of depression was close to the average and that the degrees of contacts (structural dimension) and perception (functional one) at family and friend levels were generally higher than the average. In case of social support at a community level, the degrees of formal and informal social ties (structural dimension) were lower than the average, whereas the degrees of trust and norms of collective action (functional one) were higher than the average. The correlation analysis indicated that the contacts with children, contacts with relatives, perception on the family, perception on friends, formal social ties in the community, and trust in community had a significant negative relationship with depression, respectively. According to the regression analysis, income, education, disease, perception on the family, and contacts with friends were significant predictors of depression. In other words, higher levels of income, higher levels of education, lower prevalence of diseases, higher perception on the family, and more frequent contacts with friends were significantly related to a lower degree of depression. Some implications were suggested on the basis of these findings.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

노인의 우울을 완화하는 역할을 하는 사회적 지지는 제공자에 따라 가족, 친구, 지역사회 수준으로 나눌 수 있고, 내용 및 형태에 따라 구조적 차원과 기능적 차원으로 구분할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 대전광역시에 거주하는 노인들을 대상으로, 가족, 친구, 지역사회 수준에서 제공되는 구조적 차원과 기능적 차원의 사회적 지지가 노인 우울과 어떤 관계가 있는지를 살펴보았다. 본 연구의 결과, 조사대상 노인의 우울은 보통 수준이며, 가족의 사회적 지지와 친구의 사회적 지지는 연락(구조적 차원)과 인식(기능적 차원) 모두 대체로 평균보다 높은 편이었다. 그리고 지역사회에서 제공하는 사회적 지지의 경우, 공식적․비공식적인 사회적 유대(구조적 차원)의 점수는 평균보다 낮았으나, 신뢰와 집합행동 규범(기능적 차원)의 점수는 평균보다 높았다. 사회적 지지 변수와 우울과의 상관관계분석에서는 자녀 연락, 친척 연락, 가족 인식, 친구 인식, 지역사회의 공식적인 사회적 유대, 지역사회 신뢰가 우울과 유의미한 부적(-) 관계를 가졌다. 우울에 대한 회귀분석에서는 소득, 교육, 질병 유무, 기능적 차원인 가족 인식, 구조적 차원인 친구 연락이 유의미한 변수로 나타났다. 즉 소득이 높을수록, 교육 수준이 높을수록, 질병이 없을수록, 가족에 대한 인식이 높을수록, 친구와 연락이 많을수록 우울이 낮게 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과에 근거하여 몇 가지 시사점을 제시하였다.
