One of the most distinctive features of on-line product purchase is its rapid increase in consumers` access to information. Owing to the internet, consumers can extend the opportunity to liquidate situational uncertainty by utilizing netizens` advice and the intelligent recommender models. Among these sources, e-WOM indicates the word of mouth communication on the internet, and peer recommendation can be chosen as one of the most representative type of it. On the other hand, intelligent recommender models designate the important attribute directly or cluster similar consumer groups to make recommendations. Still, the prior researches on the effect of recommendation model on consumers` attitude mainly gravitate toward intelligent recommender models, underestimating the increasing popularity of e-WOM in practice (Hoffman, Novak & Wan 2004). Moreover, even a research on e-WOM barely goes beyond the limited scope of theme as sources` trust establishment (Smith, Menon & Sivakumar 2005). In order to fill these gaps, this paper treats product review itself as an independent variable and attempts to reveal its effect upon both consumers` attitude and purchase intention. In particular, five-star grading system may well be recognized as an efficacious independent variable in predicting the change of consumers` attitude and purchase intention in the sense that it acts as the indicator of vector and depth of consumers` preference. Furthermore, while a sole five-star grading signifies only a single subjective vector and depth of an individual`s preference, plural ones can denote the reviewers` overall evaluation (mean) and the extent of the heterogeneity of their taste (variance). Based on this idea, this paper examines how increase in the number of reviews and the flow of incongruent messages affect consumers` attitude toward contents and purchase intention. The following are the summarized results of empirical analysis having been conducted based upon these hypotheses. Firstly, it has been confirmed that responding the message from outside, consumers in utilitarian context experience wider increment in their attitude change than in hedonic context. The empirical investigation found that consumers in utilitarian context respond more elastically to the external reviews imported through word-of-mouth communication and also experience the shift of the internal reference point with less hesitation. This suggests that consumers in utilitarian context are more obedient to the value of social groups and more willing to internalize others` reference point into one`s own shopping experience. Secondly, it has been substantiated that changing their attitudes, consumers in utilitarian context are more biased in the information processing to the direction of reserving the purchase than in hedonic context. The empirical analysis of this research revealed that the consumer in utilitarian context feels deeper antipathy toward the contents as the variation of multiple reviews enlarges. This attests to the asymmetry of consumers` acceptance for the favor-heightening and suppressing factor, and also the preventive inclination toward contents purchase (Chitturi, Raghunathan & Mahajan 2007). Finally, it has been reaffirmed that consumers in hedonic context fluctuate more sharply in their response elasticity upon ex-ante commitment. The experiments showed that while ex-ante commitment reduces preference differences when the message falls within ZOI(Zone of Indifference), it amplifies preference differences when the message goes out of ZOI. These results confirms the ambivalent influence of ex-ante commitment upon consumers` attitude, which functions both as a psychological dampener of lessening cognitive dissonance in maintaining their current attitude and as a amplifier of facilitating affectionate rebound in converting their attitude.
