공화적 공존의 전제로서의 평등

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper assumes two arguments. First, the principle of equality should be conceived to cover not only the idea of formal equality but also that of substantive equality. Formal equality centers on the equality of opportunity and non-discrimination which tend to neglect or ignore substantive differences in human conditions and social realities while substantive equality attempts to provide substance to the concept of equality. Second, the unsatisfied reality that equality as formal equality dominates equality discourses in Korea can be attributed to the lack of a comprehensive and basic political philosophic understanding of equality though it is well embedded in the Korean Constitution. This represents a distorted constitutional ideal and practices of the democratic republic.
This paper also tries to demonstrate that if egalitarian approach seeing equality as the basic virtue of the democratic republic is equipped with a republican concept of liberty as non-domination and self-help, it can be a stepping stone to reformulate the principle of equality as the basis of a republican co-existence by way of enhancing substantive equality.
