The R&D manpower of pharmaceutical companies are experts in pharmaceutical industry technology and play an important role in the pharmaceutical industry, which is a key theme of the 4th industrial revolution in Korea. The purpose of this study is to develop a systematic competency model for R&D manpower of pharmaceutical companies to contribute to fostering R&D manpower in the pharmaceutical industry, which enables pharmaceutical companies to derive advanced research results and actively and proactively respond to various internal and external needs. This study derived the results based on research on the current status and role of R&D manpower of pharmaceutical companies using the general model overlay technique proposed by Dubois (1993). The main result of this study was to divide the R&D manpower of pharmaceutical companies into 4 ranks (L1~L4), and select 3~5 essential competencies for each rank to derive the final competency model. In this case, notation was omitted on the premise that the upper rank already possesses the essential competencies of the lower rank. Also, in order to compensate for the possibility of insufficient experience in evaluating the L1 rank, the L2 rank also evaluated the essential competencies of the L1 rank. The results of this study are expected to be used as foundation data for fostering and developing R&D manpower in the pharmaceutical industry by devising a systematic capacity development plan for R&D manpower in pharmaceutical companies.
