Pronunciation is one of the most important factors to communicate with each other. Because communication is the most standard element among the people. In foreign language, a clear pronunciation is very critical. English liquids /l/ sound is one of the difficult pronunciation. It has several allophones.
The purpose of this thesis is to study the English /l/ sounds among the Korean university students. In order to achieve the goal, the three pronunciation tests are conducted; tests of words, phrases and sentences.
In the word test, we wants to know how the education of variations of English /l/ effects the pronunciation in an acoustic way. Phrases test is to see the changes of pronunciation in phrases involved in English /l/ as the same case of the word test. The sentence test is taken to know what kinds of change there are between word test and sentence test.
The results of those tests are as follows:
First, in the word test, there is a visible gap around 24% between two groups except the syllabic [ḷ]. Because we usually learn the clear [l] and dark [ɫ]. That is, the group of English major students pronounce the variation of liquids /l/ well. They pronounce the dark [ɫ] better than clear [l] and syllabic [ḷ]. However, the group of non-English major students pronounce syllabic [ḷ] better than dark [ɫ] and clear [l].
Next, in the phrases test, there is an insignificant gap between two groups. In the sentence test, there is a slight gap between two groups except the clear [l].
There is gap between theory and practice in the pattern of formants, waveforms and spectrograms because of the vowels and consonants which are in front of or behind English liquids /l/. Also the education of the variations of phonemes effect the pronunciation among the Korean university students. I suggest that when we teach the English, we instruct not only the grammar but also pronunciation including variations and the changes of the words which are before or next the words including variations in a systematical and practical way.
