Korea rail was an important transportation network in modern Korean society for a long period. It will also play a pivotal role in building a new period centering on Pacific Rim and North East/NE Asia in the future. However, majority of the current railroad bridges shows the poor performance in structure because they are old bridges built before 1970 and also have excessive noise, vibration and problems related to flood water level. Therefore, positive improvement plans are being implemented.
In the past, most road bridges had mainly applied PREFLEX-BEAM bridges at about 40m of medium span part. However, because they were poor in economic efficiency and also had problems in durability such as cracks after construction, various construction methods such as IPC, SPC, modified and improved PSC beam are actively applied in designs recently. But it is a fact that application at medium and small section bridges was relatively lower compared to road bridges because weighted proportion of secondary loads such as train load and gravel tracks was very high in railroad bridges unlike road bridges. However, recently, many new construction methods capable to replace PREFLEX-BEAM bridges applied to the existing railroad bridges are being suggested focusing on turnkey projects. In addition, it is expected that they will be applied actively in the future designs.
Therefore, in this study, overview and problems of the existing PREFLEX synthetic type girder bridges are reviewed and several construction methods now under construction or the completed bridges is compared and analyzed as alternative construction methods.
